Chapter 294 Varyn, The God of the Abyss
Chapter 294 Varyn, The God of the Abyss
Bottom of the Abyss
When Alex fell into the abyss, all thanks to Morgathis, the primordial abyss dragon, the God of the Abyss received a notification instantly.
[Someone has entered the Abyss.]
It was one of the many ways he kept track of intruders in his domain.
"Good," the god muttered, a grin forming on his face, hidden entirely in the shadows.
He believed, like everyone else before, this new fool would die before even reaching the second layer.
The abyss wasn't forgiving, and the darkness alone was enough to swallow most.
But then...
Ding!
[He has reached the second layer.]
The god's grin faded slightly.
"Well, the monsters are there now," he whispered to himself, brushing off the concern. "He'll be stopped soon enough."
But then...
Ding!
[He has reached the third layer.]
The God of the Abyss, Varyn, frowned.
His domain was supposed to be unbeatable.
He had the perfect setup: darkness, monsters, traps, and time itself bent to his will.@@@@
No one should've been able to get this far.
In the entire history of his abyss, only three people had ever made it to the sixth layer.
Out of those three, two never had enough [Abyss Fragments] to forge the [Abyss Key].
The third did, but they were slaughtered the moment they met Varyn.
No one could defeat him here.
So... why was he feeling uneasy?
[He has reached the fourth layer.]
[He has reached the fifth layer.]
Varyn clenched his fists.
The intruder was tearing through everything like it was nothing.
The abyssal corruption spell, the one designed to rot the minds of anyone who lingered too long, wasn't working.
But then, Alex dropped into the sixth layer.
And Varyn felt a wave of relief.
He let out a smirk.
"Game over for him."
[The intruder has reached the sixth layer.]
[Fortunately, he only has 960 Abyss Fragments in his possession.]
Varyn's grin grew wider.
It was over.
The sixth layer was different.
There were no monsters, no traps. Just the [Abyss Door], standing tall and impenetrable.
Without 1,000 [Abyss Fragments], the door wouldn't open, and that guy was short by forty.
He had won.
"Haha, keep trying, little bug," Varyn laughed, watching through his divine panel as Alex tried to destroy the barrier back to the fifth layer.
Varyn's grin widened even further as he saw Alex eventually sit down on the cold, dark floor, eyes closed.
The god could see it happening, the creeping darkness in Alex's mind, the thoughts growing darker and heavier, just as he had planned.
Of course, he noticed Alex's skeletons trying to attack the [Abyss Door].
But that was useless, even a god couldn't destroy that door.
Danger.
He had to kill this human now.
Otherwise, his life might be at risk.
Varyn had planned to let Alex rot in the abyss, driven mad by the darkness, eventually becoming another one of his corrupted soldiers.
But now... now he saw it.
Divine energy.
It radiated off Alex in waves.
Varyn's worst suspicion was confirmed.
Alex was a Chosen One.
"This human..." Varyn growled, "he has a forbidden skill."
Morgathis trembled.
"L-LORD!" he shouted. "T-The human used that skill before! It can destroy everything!"
Varyn's face darkened.
"I know..." he muttered. "It's Kaelios' skill. [World Cleaver]."
If Alex unleashed that here, it could be catastrophic.
But Varyn wasn't worried. Not yet.
He still had control over the undead skeletons that Alex had summoned.
They, too, were vulnerable to the abyssal corruption. And now, they were his.
As Alex focused, charging up his devastating skill, Varyn prepared his own move.
If Alex survived, fine.
Varyn would kill him himself.
And when Kaelios, the god who had chosen Alex, felt the loss of his champion and thus lost half of his powers for two weeks, Varyn would strike.
He'd kill Kaelios and add him to his abyssal forces too.
"This is perfect," Varyn whispered, a twisted grin spreading across his face.
He hadn't expected this kind of opportunity.
He had his doubts about his grand plan before, after all, the other gods were powerful.
But now?
Now he had a chance.
If he could take down a Chosen One, and then a god... victory was within reach.
"Watch closely, Morgathis," Varyn chuckled darkly. "This is the beginning of our new world."
He snapped his fingers.
The undead skeletons turned, their hollow eyes locking onto Alex.
Alex didn't notice at first.
He was too deep in focus, his mind consumed by the power he was about to unleash.
But then... he sensed it.
Something was wrong.
Alex opened his eyes just in time to see the betrayal, the skeletons, his own creations, lunging at him.
A blade pierced his back, and for a moment, everything went black.
But then... a soft glow surrounded him.
[Blessing of the Fox Spirit Activated.]
Alex's body healed instantly, the lethal strike nullified.
Varyn's grin faltered.
Alex wasn't done yet.
"You'll only be a stepping stone to the world I'll create," Varyn hissed.
But even as he said it, he knew that this wasn't going to be easy.
"Let's end this."
