Chapter 32: Delicious

"Are you full?"

Xu Qing lazily leaned against the back of his chair, tilting his head to ask Jiang He.

"Almost."

Jiang He patted her stomach, feeling like she could eat a bit more, but since no one else was eating, she felt too embarrassed to continue.

That would make her look like a glutton.

Xu Qing nodded and then turned to Wang Zijun, thinking for a moment before laughing. "Where should we start? I never thought this was a big deal."

"Then what's this about?" Wang Zijun sighed in frustration, glancing at Liang Zi. "Are you going to say it's no big deal too?"

"Of course, what's the big deal? It's all in the past. I just wanted to ask Brother Qing for some advice, have a drink, and then... well, you see..." Liang Zi chuckled, staring at Xu Qing.

"Heh, heh, look at this," Xu Qing shrugged, turned his head, and spat. "I just don't like the guy, don't like his attitude... nothing personal, just can't stand him, that's all."

"Hey, Brother Qing, you don’t like me, huh?"

"Wasn’t it painful enough last time?"

The table fell silent for a moment, and the other people chatting casually also noticed the tension here, all turning to look.

"Why are you acting like children?" Wang Zijun was now regretting putting these two together. "And when did you two fight? When was the last time? — Forget it, forget it, just stop talking. Liang Zi, go back to your seat. Today, everything’s on me, just shut up and let’s make sure we enjoy my girlfriend's birthday."

Liang Zi stared at Xu Qing but didn’t speak, and Xu Qing pulled out a toothpick and started picking his teeth. If the guy hadn’t come over with his annoying chatter, he wouldn’t have even looked at him. Instead, he whispered to Jiang He about which dish was good.

"Go back, go back. I still need to sit here," Wang Zijun urged when he saw Liang Zi standing still.

"Look at this, I just came over to offer a toast, how did it end up like this?" Liang Zi tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Brother Qing and I drank this together, what’s the big deal?"

"I’m not drinking."

"Tsk... Then I’ll drink to your wife, look at how beautiful she is—"

"She’s not drinking either." Xu Qing raised his head. "And she’s not your wife, don’t go making things worse."

"Right, I’m not." Jiang He nodded seriously.

"Don’t talk to him, it’s disgusting." Xu Qing advised.

"..."

"Stop talking so much!" Wang Zijun was furious, "Is this never-ending?"

"Liang Zi, go back to your seat!"

Once Liang Zi returned to his seat, Wang Zijun sat back down, clicking his tongue. "What was this all about?"

The custom-made cake from the wealthy family was naturally enormous—larger than Xu Qing had expected—three layers high, over a person’s height, wheeled in on a small cart, candles and heart-shaped decorations shining brightly on top, with the "Happy Birthday" song playing throughout the room.

"It’s so big..." Xu Qing scratched his chin, feeling a bad premonition.

"Really big," Jiang He stared at the gigantic cake. "Is all of this for eating?"

"Not all of it... wait, after blowing out the candles, stay far away, I’ll bring you some if you want to eat—just hide in that corner, got it?"

"Why?"

"Can’t explain it, you’ll understand later."

Xu Qing led Jiang He over and saw Wang Zijun holding a microphone, acting as if he were deeply in love.

The rich family loved playing these flashy games.

They didn’t even wait for people to finish eating before bringing in the cake, now finally introducing the girlfriend under dim lights... Xu Qing silently complained, predicting that this girlfriend wouldn’t make it past the end of the year.

After the candles were blown out and the plastic knife cut the cake, Xu Qing turned to tell Jiang He to hide.

Jiang He obediently stepped back into the corner he indicated, watching these people singing and clapping like they were performing some evil ritual.

It was such a strange activity.

"I got you a big piece! Come on, eat," Xu Qing said as he ran over with a piece of cake bigger than his face, smiling broadly.

"Is it good?" He raised an eyebrow when he saw Jiang He’s eyes light up as she tasted the cream.

"It’s delicious!" Jiang He nodded vigorously, cream still on her lips, nearly jumping up with joy.

This was probably the best thing she had ever tasted... Her eyes wandered to the massive cake and she asked, "What about you?"

"I don’t like sweet things."

Xu Qing sighed, thinking that country bumpkins were easy to please. A birthday cake was enough to make Jiang He light up like she was eating the finest cuisine. Her eyes were almost sparkling.

"Why do I have to hide while eating? Is this piece you gave me too big?"

"No, you just eat slowly, just hide, that’s all."

Jiang He’s confusion was answered a minute later when the cake flew everywhere. Her thoughts instantly scattered, and she subconsciously reached out to protect the cake.

She looked at them, feeling sorry for the chaos they were causing, and quietly retreated into her corner with her giant piece of cake. Taking a big bite, she suddenly felt a bit emotional.

She really wished her second boss could taste this thing called cake.

That second boss, who never wasted food and always drank large bowls of water, would probably smile with her eyes squinting if she tried this.

It was really good.
