Chapter 131: Long legs are amazing
After a day, Xu Qing took Jiang He back home to grab a meal.
As April approached, the temperature steadily rose. By noon, the sun was already a bit scorching. Thankfully, neither of them minded the sun—if they did, it would mean Jiang He had completely adapted to modern life.
Jiang He was fully dressed in spring attire: thick-soled white sneakers, high-waisted straight-leg pants, a cream-colored cropped jacket, and her hair naturally draped over her back. She looked clean and crisp as she walked beside Xu Qing, her steps light and steady.
Her footsteps echoed, a rhythmic da-da-da. Thanks to her martial arts training, her shoulders naturally relaxed, making her posture appear tall and upright. Her eyes sparkled with a lively brightness.
“What are you staring at?”
“I think you’re looking better and better...” Xu Qing reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, saying exactly what was on his mind.
A woman doesn’t have to be rail-thin to be beautiful. After this winter of nourishment, Jiang He’s face, wrists, waist, and legs had all become slightly fuller. The sharp lines of her face had softened, her brows and eyes carried a gentler look, and she radiated vitality.
Zhou Suzhi felt the same way.
She had just finished a round of mahjong and was heading home when she spotted the two from a distance. One tall, one short, hand in hand, walking towards the house. She quickened her steps to catch up but realized they were walking so fast it was impossible to keep up.
“Dad, where’s Mom?” Xu Qing called out as soon as they got home.
Moments later, Zhou Suzhi walked in from outside.
“You two, why were you walking so fast?”
“We’ve got long legs.”
“Think you’re so great because of that?” Zhou Suzhi shot back, glancing at Jiang He, and couldn’t help but beam with joy.
How could this girl be so pretty?
Xu Wenbin, however, didn’t share the same excitement. With a grim expression, he stared at Xu Qing, still upset about having his account blocked. Holding a large teacup, he sat on the couch, exchanged a polite greeting with Jiang He, and then turned away, ignoring the idle bum that was his son.@@@@
“Still mad?”
“Mad about what?” Xu Wenbin retorted.
“Good, as long as you’re not mad.”
Xu Qing didn’t take it to heart. He pulled Jiang He down to sit beside him and snapped a fresh photo of her. Then he scrolled through his gallery to find older pictures, handing the phone to Jiang He to compare for herself.
“Everyone has their own dreams and pursuits. What you see as undesirable, I might find perfect. Life is personal. You can’t define my happiness or my future by your standards.”
Besides, they were just boyfriend and girlfriend, not bound by marriage, only mutual affection.
Now, Jiang He was in a transitional phase. She wasn’t entirely independent yet, but in six months or a year, she would be. She wasn’t Xu Qing’s child or an accessory. No matter how unique her background was, it didn’t change the facts.
Xu Qing understood this well. When irreconcilable differences arise, it simply means the relationship isn’t working, and breaking up is the solution.
What truly scared him wasn’t Jiang He suddenly vanishing, but her staying, and the two of them drifting apart—strangers under the same roof. Without sorting out their dynamic and relationship, problems would arise.
This wasn’t a game; it was life. Having a “wife from the past” didn’t mean a secure, carefree future.
A happy marriage is the pinnacle of life’s aspirations across all walks of life—not easily attained, but exceedingly rare.
Jiang He noticed Xu Qing’s gaze and raised her head to meet his eyes briefly before lowering it again. She fiddled with his phone, scrolling through his gallery.
She found two-thirds of the photos were of her. She opened a video of herself practicing swordplay but quickly closed it and handed the phone back to Xu Qing.
“Want an apple?” Xu Qing asked, holding his own in his mouth while grabbing another to peel.
“I’ll do it myself.”
Jiang He’s bright eyes sparkled as she took the apple and knife from him, deftly peeling it herself.
“You two...”
Xu Wenbin turned his head to look at them, recalling the endless stream of videos on Xu Qing’s account. He didn’t know what to say.
He got up and went to his study to fetch his phone.
Jiang He glanced around and leaned closer to Xu Qing, whispering, “Are you afraid I’ll suddenly leave?”
“What?” Xu Qing was momentarily confused.
“You’ve taken so many pictures of me...”
Jiang He lowered her head, sliced a piece of apple, and held it up for Xu Qing to eat, a smile spreading across her face.
“Are you afraid I’ll suddenly leave?”
