Chapter 60 The Gift
Chapter 60 The Gift
Over the next two days, Lynn and his group were busy preparing supplies for their trip.
The snow on the streets of the Northern City had been cleared to the sides.
Lynn walked alone on the stone path, occasionally breathing warm air into her palms.
He was looking for something.
A long-overdue birthday gift.
Along the way, he had received a lot of help from Laofen.
As a companion, it's only natural to give a gift, right?
But the question is, what should we give as a gift?
Sending food?
This girl may be a foodie, but she finished eating and that was it, which made her seem insincere.
Soon Lynn stopped in front of a grocery stall.
The stall owner was an old man missing a front tooth, huddled in his fur coat, shivering.
The stall displayed some jewelry, including a lotus flower bracelet and ring, as well as a pile of unidentified animal bones.
"Hey buddy, want to take a look?"
The old man grinned and said.
Lynn glanced at it, shook his head, and continued walking forward.
I visited four or five shops in a row, but still came up empty-handed.
Northern City was, after all, a key border city, and supplies were prioritized for the army, making civilian goods scarce.
To find good deals, you have to go to places that can't be found in the light of day.
Deep inside the alley is a small gathering place, which is relatively dark and damp.
Lynn squatted down in front of a burly middle-aged man's stall.
Jewelry and ores were piled haphazardly on the stall, but in the corner, a delicate little box caught his attention.
A hair clip lay inside the box.
It is made entirely of mithril and is shaped like a hexagonal snowflake.
At the center of the snowflake is a blue gem the size of a grain of rice.
"Good taste."
The stall owner perked up immediately when business came in.
"This is a magical tool that assists in spellcasting. When you wear it, you can cast spells even without a staff."
"That's not bad."
Lynn picked up the hair clip. "How much?"
"Four gold coins."
The stall owner held out his palm. "This is mithril. The cost of the materials alone is more than this."
"This sapphire is of average quality, and its magical conductivity isn't very high."
Lynn tossed the hair clips back into the box and made a move to leave. "Two, if you don't like them, forget it."
"Hey buddy, you're being a bit too ruthless by cutting the price in half right off the bat."
The man smiled wryly and held up three fingers: "Three, no less."
"Okay, deal."
Lynn stopped and took out four gold coins from his pocket and tossed them over.
With this large sum of money spent, the gold coins he had earned from exchanging the meteorite bird during the Level 1 Mage assessment were almost gone.
"make a deal."
The stall owner deftly took the gold coins, packed the hair clip, and handed it over.
Thanks.
Lynn closed the lid and put it in his pocket.
……
It was already evening when they returned to the city lord's mansion.
As soon as Lynn entered the room, he saw Isabella lounging on the sofa, her long legs crossed, swirling a half-empty glass of red wine in her hand.
"Oh, you've decided to come back?"
Isa peered at him through the wine-red liquid, her eyes darting around. "You haven't been seen all afternoon. Where have you been gallivanting off to?"
"Just browsing around."
Lynn kept her eyes straight ahead, preparing to go straight upstairs.
"Who are you giving that hair clip to?"
Isa's voice drifted over.
Lynn paused, instinctively pressed her pocket, and frowned at her: "You've been following me?"
"Giggle giggle..."
Isa let out a string of silvery laughter. "I don't have that kind of perverse sense of humor. Don't you know you can see the entire city from the observation deck of the mansion?"
"You must have a lot of free time."
Lynn glanced at her.
"Alright, alright."
Isa pouted. "Go ahead, that little girl is just spacing out on the second-floor terrace."
Lynn ignored her and quickly walked up the stairs.
……
Second floor terrace.
Laofen was leaning on the railing, gazing at the square in the distance.
"What are you looking at?"
Lynn walked to her side and shielded her from the wind on one side.
"I'm watching them."
Laofen pointed to a group of children playing in the square. "Lynn, you live on the border where you are constantly threatened by demons, so why aren't they afraid at all? They're laughing so happily over there."
"Because there are fearless heroes in the city like Earl Hurst, they certainly don't need to worry."
Lynn followed her gaze and said, "As long as the flags on the city walls haven't fallen, they know they're safe."
"Maybe they'll become like that someday."
Laofen pointed to two little boys fighting with wooden swords.
"Because the spirit of heroes is passed on, just like the story of Simmel inspired countless people to become heroes."
Lynn looked away, reached into his pocket, and grasped the velvet box.
"Reach out your hand."
"what?"
Laopin paused for a moment, then obediently extended her hand.
Lynn took the blue velvet box out of her pocket and placed it in her palm.
"For you."
Laofen stared at the box for a long time, then suddenly burst out laughing.
"What are you laughing at?"
"No, it's just that I find Lynn to be surprisingly thoughtful sometimes."
Laofen carefully took out the hair clip, dangling it in the afterglow. "I like it very much, thank you."
"If you like it, that's good."
Lynn breathed a sigh of relief. "Want to try it on?"
"I can't see where I am, can you help me?"
Laofen turned around, her back to him, and lowered her head slightly.
Lynn took the hair clip, clumsily brushed away the stray hairs by Laoffen's ear, and pinned the hair clip to the end of her hair.
The mithril snowflakes complemented her brown hair perfectly.
Lynn took a step back, looked him over, and said, "It suits you quite well."
Laofen subconsciously touched her hair clip, smiling brightly, "I'll cherish it!"
……
The next morning, at the city gate of Northland.
Before the cold fog had dissipated, Earl Hurst himself led a squad of guards to see him off.
They also gifted Lynn and his party a two-horse carriage.
"Are you really not staying a few more days?"
The count looked at the group with some regret, "Although the Demon King's army has retreated, it is still very dangerous outside."
"No, we've stayed long enough."
Lynn checked the supplies on the wagon: dry rations, water, and spare weapons.
Very well prepared.
"Then I wish you all good luck in your military campaigns."
Earl Hurst did not try to stop him, and solemnly gave a knightly salute.
"If one day you grow weary, the gates of the North City will always be open to you."
Thank you.
Lynn returned the greeting, then turned to look at the three people behind him.
Cromwell sat on the carriage shaft, his gaze fixed on the direction of the barrier.
Isa leaned against the carriage, holding an ancient book she couldn't understand. When Lynn looked over, she gave him a flirtatious wink.
Laofen said she was going to drive the carriage, so she took the reins and sat in front of the carriage.
"Set off!"
Lynn jumped into the car. "Destination: The Demon King's Castle!"
Laofen raised her whip, making a crisp sound.
The carriage slowly started moving, rolling over the snow and leaving two deep ruts.
