Chapter 7 Senior Brother
Chapter 7 Senior Brother
"Xiao Wei, please sit down." Yu Sheng gestured with his hand.
He was about thirty-seven or thirty-eight years old. His hair was probably permed, slightly curly and fluffy, and he wore frameless glasses. There were light wrinkles between his eyebrows, left by long-term focus.
Wei Hongsi sat down on the small sofa to the side: "Hello, President Gu, hello, President Yu."
"Speaking of which, we're not strangers. I was one of Professor Zhou's first batch of doctoral students, so I could be considered your senior." Gu Shiming had a friendly smile on his face. "I should have talked to you after you joined the company, but unfortunately, I've been too busy lately and often have to travel for work, so I haven't had the time."
He must have been thirty-five years old. He had neat short hair, a clear jawline without stubble, and slightly protruding cheekbones that gave him a sharp look.
Wei Hongsi smiled and nodded: "I often hear my teacher mention you."
"Then you two are really close," Yu Sheng said with a smile. "No wonder Xiao Wei is so outstanding. He was promoted to Z4 as soon as he joined the company. A great teacher produces a great student."
Zhiwei Technology's employee job levels are divided into technical positions starting with Z and management positions starting with W.
For Wei Hongsi, a recent master's graduate, achieving a Z4 level is indeed a very high starting point. While his prestigious university background certainly contributed, Professor Zhou's role was clearly decisive; otherwise, he should have been Z3 or even Z2.
Wei Hongsi did not deny this: "That was indeed thanks to my teacher."
"That was just a stepping stone given by the teacher; your abilities far surpass that." Gu Shiming paused, then continued, "The analysis commission you handled yesterday—did you use your own algorithm model to perform secondary analysis?"
"Yes."
"Your teacher showed me your graduation thesis, and it was very well written. I didn't expect you to be able to apply it so quickly, which is even more remarkable."
"Mr. Gu, you flatter me."
Wei Hongsi was somewhat surprised. He had thought Gu Shiming was just being polite, but he hadn't expected that the other party had actually paid attention to him.
All the work he handled at WD is traceable, and these two have probably already reviewed his work over the past two days, but that doesn't include the data analysis he did on his own computer.
Gu Shiming's ability to pinpoint the problem clearly indicates that he had carefully read his graduation thesis.
"No need to be modest, it's not a bad thing for young people to have vigor," Gu Shiming said with a smile, picking up the teacup on the table and taking a sip of water.
Yu Sheng then asked, "Xiao Wei, the data from the positive analysis of the task you handled this morning is very abnormal. What's your take on it?"
"I knew there were problems, but I didn't know how to fix them. I also thought it wouldn't affect the client's needs, so I submitted the report first."
"The company will investigate the relevant abnormal situation. If you have any thoughts, you can bring them up."
"My opinions are all written into the report; I have no other thoughts."
"That's good. However, there are a few things I might need you to explain."
"No problem, I can be responsible for my job duties."
Yu Sheng smiled and nodded in approval, then looked at Gu Shiming.
"Hongsi, you're much better than me. When I first started working, I couldn't handle these things at all," Gu Shiming said with a smile. "Don't worry, with me as your senior, if you suffer any injustice, I wouldn't be able to explain it to the teacher!"
Wei Hongsi quickly expressed his gratitude: "Thank you for taking care of me, senior brother."
Having reached this point in the conversation, the communication was considered complete. Seeing that Yu Sheng and Gu Shiming had nothing more to say, Wei Hongsi got up to take his leave.
The office door closed again, and Yu Sheng said with some emotion, "I've heard people from the Second Department mention this junior colleague of President Gu several times, and I thought he was a tech geek. But after meeting him today, I realize he's not like that at all."
He really didn't expect that his communication with Wei Hongsi would go so smoothly.
"Don't believe everything you hear." Gu Shiming chuckled and shook his head. "My professors never take on foolish students, and in recent years they haven't personally supervised a master's student. Do you still think my junior is simple?"
He also knew that before Wei Hongsi was to come to the company, his teacher had made a special phone call to the president to recommend him, but there was no need to tell Yu Sheng about that.
"He doesn't seem like a newcomer to the workforce at all; his technical skills are exceptional." Yu Sheng nodded in agreement. "But is the algorithm model he wrote himself better than our standard model?"
"It might be more useful for some special situations, but its overall energy efficiency may not be."
"So, does this mean... our standard model has been cracked?"
"That should be true."
"Then I will arrange for iterative generation immediately."
"Don't rush things, or you'll alert them," Gu Shiming said meaningfully. "The two analysis commissions from Paradise Park are ultimately about the same thing."
Yu Sheng understood what he meant, and a look of shock appeared on his face: "You mean, CMS has cracked our standard model?"
"This is just my speculation; there's no concrete evidence yet." Gu Shiming glanced at his watch. "I'm going to see Director Ji now. Wait for my news. Several centers will be involved in this matter; we just need to proceed cautiously and avoid any oversights."
……
……
When Wei Hongsi came out of the director's office, he saw that it was already past 1 p.m., so he decided not to go to the bookstore. Instead, he sat down at his workstation, leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes to rest.
During lunch break, the lights in the common office area are turned off, and people are sleeping everywhere, either lying down or slumped over. The dim lighting makes it impossible to read, which is why he doesn't want to stay at the company during lunchtime.
The biggest takeaway from that conversation was probably a promise from Gu Shiming. Whether this promise will have long-term validity is hard to say, but it should be something we can count on in the short term.
Having a senior colleague who is also my boss to look after me is pretty good.
However, one shouldn't rely too much on such relationships; ultimately, it depends on one's own abilities and conduct. Nobody likes someone who can't be helped, otherwise even brothers wouldn't be of any use.
When the afternoon workday started, Wei Hongsi had no specific work tasks, so he continued to optimize the plan he was working on.
The company encourages innovation; anyone with a good idea can send it to a designated email address, where the CEO is said to review it personally. Once adopted, the proposer receives a corresponding reward.
After he officially joined the company, he was always marginalized by He Feng, never participated in team projects, and was assigned few tasks.
The main reason He Feng disliked him was their job titles. He Feng had worked at the company for almost seven years before being promoted from Z2 to Z4, only one supervisor position higher than him, a newcomer. Naturally, He Feng felt awkward about him.
Wei Hongsi was well aware of this. In order to make himself appear less idle and avoid being misunderstood as someone who liked to slack off, he used his spare time at work to create a product design concept and sent it to that email address.
He received a reply last week, asking him to continue refining the plan and report to management at an appropriate time.
He wasn't sure if the reply came from the CEO, nor did he know who he needed to report to, but being better prepared was definitely the right thing to do; at least it could still be considered a work assignment.
