Chapter 262: Life 73, Age 50, Martial Master Peak

Chapter 262: Life 73, Age 50, Martial Master Peak

After disappearing from Mount Jiang, I immediately headed north. Our attackers wouldn’t have had time to scour the surrounding villages yet, and I needed to work fast before that happened.

My first stop was the small city where we had resettled SuYin’s family. I wanted to talk to them, to explain what was going on, but I wasn’t willing to spend the time that would require. I simply shoved sleeping pills into everyone’s mouths and threw them into my storage space.

Following this, I used my wind horse to make a quick circuit of the Wastes.

Once the invaders learned that we were missing, I was certain that they would go looking for people’s families to try to find out where we had gone. If possible, I wanted to prevent that from happening. So, I ran around the Wastes and grabbed all of them that I could.

With each group I grabbed, I didn’t stop to ask questions or explain why I had come. I just sent everyone to sleep and shoved them into one of the subterranean chambers of my storage space. They might not thank me for this, but they would at least survive to be angry with me.

Was all this necessary? Wouldn’t all these people vanish and come right back after my death?

I didn’t know.

Did the world end when I died, or did it persist? Based on what I had seen from Mei’s and Emperor Li’s blessings, I had begun to believe it was the former, but I was not willing to take that risk without being certain. Saving these people might have been meaningless, but it was what I needed to do.

Once these families were accounted for, I turned north and headed for the Verdant Forest Sect.

As I departed the Wastes, I had an unreasonable fear that an Emperor or a Sovereign would suddenly pop out and capture me. While no one should have had any understanding of my plans or motivations, there were powerful information blessings in this world, and it seemed likely that the Sovereigns would have subordinates capable of tracking my movements.

If a powerful cultivator appeared, I would have to commit suicide immediately, losing years of SuYin’s memories and dooming many of those that I had tucked away in my storage space to an instant death.

Fortunately, this didn’t happen. Even though I was nervous the entire time, no one stood out to stop me, and I could only begrudgingly give my thanks to the Earthly Dao. While I didn’t know how much influence it had over blessings after they had already been handed out, I knew that it almost certainly had ways to reveal my location if it had wanted to.

With no one blocking my path, I quickly made my way to SuYin’s city. While I hadn’t had a chance to speak with her in recent years, she had kept me abreast of her activities through messages sent via the Blue Wind Pavilion.

After becoming a core disciple of the Verdant Forest Sect, she had been granted the lordship over one of its smaller cities, and she had already been able to advance to Martial Lord 4. However, Young Master Wang’s preparations for entering the Nine Rivers Sect were nearly complete, and she would soon be relinquishing her position to join him there.

Thankfully, this hadn’t happened yet.

After reaching SuYin’s city, I quickly rushed to the lord’s manor.

Her guards moved to stop me, but I held up the banner that SuYin had given me the last time we had met. It was made of undyed, white silk, and both sides displayed the image of a large golden leaf.

When her guards saw this banner, they narrowed their eyes, but they immediately stepped aside.

Inside the manor, upon seeing the banner in my hand, the manor’s steward quickly led me to a small sitting room, sat me down, and served me tea. Moments later SuYin arrived.

After setting up an anti-eavesdropping formation, I gave her a quick rundown of the situation. Once it was complete, I looked at her, hoping that she might have an idea for what I should do now.

“Your family is asleep in my... ‘inner world.’ If they remain there, then when I revert back in time, those who were alive at the start of the loop will die. I need a safe place to put them before that happens. Somewhere unconnected to the troubles in the Wastes.”

“That... I...”

SuYin’s head dropped, and her eyes started roaming the room. She looked nearly as lost as I was. Saving these families had seemed like the right thing to do in the moment, but now, after the fact, I had no idea what to do with them.

SuYin might be able to provide for them while she was a city lord, but she was planning to leave and enter the Nine Rivers Sect. Was she just supposed to leave so many outsiders here and hope that no one was able to connect them to what had just happened in the Wastes?

Suddenly, her expression firmed.

“Let me contact Young Master Wang.”

The young master arrived at SuYin’s manor two days later. He hadn’t even questioned her about why she had asked him to come, and a simple request was all that it took to get him to enter an anti-eavesdropping formation with us.

Once we were seated, he looked at me.

“What is this about?”

I took a breath. There was no reason to hide anything. The more he knew, the more he would be able to help, and soon, he wouldn’t have any way of harming me.

“I have around a hundred refugees from the Wastes that need a safe place to live. They are related to the people who escaped from Mount Jiang. I am worried about what will happen to them if the Zhuge Clan, or someone else, finds them.”

Young Master Wang’s face twitched furiously as a riot of emotions passed through him. Needing time to think, he used the excuse of taking a sip of tea to pause the conversation. Then, after several moments, he set his cup down and looked me directly in the eye.

“What is your offer?”

I took out a scroll and placed it on the table. “This is what the armies were looking for in the Wastes. It contains everything one needs to know to concoct a Rank 2 Body Tempering Pill. It might be a good idea to simply destroy it, but I will let you decide what to do with it yourself. Also, I will instruct my disciple, Bao, to join you in the Nine Rivers Sect. You will find that his grasp of herbalism is exceptional, and I can almost guarantee that he will be able to lead a successful group on the path to Heaven City for you. Finally... I will owe you a debt. This might not mean much to you now, but it will in the future. In short, I will help you out a single time.”

The three different terms had three very different effects on the young man. The scroll sparked a hint of avarice, my knowledge of Heaven City made him wary, and my offer of a debt just seemed to confuse him. Still, after everything was combined together, he gave me a nod.

“Fine. I will help you this once, and you will help me once in the future.”

With the young master’s agreement, we got to work.

After being taken to a secluded courtyard, I set up a defensive formation and took out everyone’s families. Then, I took out the members of my clan to give them a chance to say goodbye.

When these young cultivators first appeared, they looked like they wanted to give me a serious talking to about the various issues they were having with my storage space, but upon seeing their families and hearing that they needed to say goodbye, these complaints were forgotten.

With hundreds of people involved, this process was rather slow, but I did my best to hurry it along. I wanted to give everyone as much time as I could, but we were exposed here, and we needed to vanish as soon as possible.

When everything was over, I stood alone in a room with Bao and SuYin. I handed both of them an orb, and after they imprinted their memories onto it. Then, we said our goodbyes, and I departed.

Most of what I had wanted to accomplish in this life was complete, but I had left the Wastes in a bit of a hurry. I still needed to visit the Rosehill Hot Springs and collect my belongings.

When I entered Rosehill, it was clear that something was amiss. No one was wandering the streets, and there were no sounds of busy people going about their daily lives. The once lively tourist destination had been turned into a ghost town.

It didn’t take much effort to guess the reason for this. The fact that I had leased this land from the Su Clan was public knowledge, and I was certain that the armies that had attacked Mount Jiang had come here as well.

I immediately closed the box, but its formation didn’t activate. I was still above the island.

Even though the seed was no longer being fed an endless stream of essence, it was still filled with energy, so it was still producing both water and heat. As the box began heating up and water began seeping out of it, I frantically tried to shove it into my storage space, but nothing happened. I was still over the island.

Just as I was worried that the seed might burst free from its confines, the box vanished.

The moment it did, I swallowed a poison pill, ending my agony.
